About this photo

On a hike near Hathersage in the Peak District, I saw these old stone millstones laid at the side of the path. There are over a thousand of these stones abandoned in the Peak District and they typically age from around the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used to grind grain into flour. Each stone can be over 1.8 metres in diameter and weigh in at over 3.6 tonnes, so I can’t see any being stolen for decoration purposes! The stones in this photo were covered in a leafy moss.
