About this photo

Orrest Head is a hill near the eastern shore of Windermere in the southern Lake District. To reach the summit there is a nice walk through the woods, which zig zags up the hill, it takes about 20 minutes. Orrest Hill is the first fell that Alfred Wainwright climbed and is the subject of a chapter in his book, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. Wainwright describes Orrest Head as “our first ascent in Lakeland, our first sight of mountains in tumultuous array across glittering waters, our awakening to beauty” and also as “a fitting finale, too, to a life made happy by fellwandering”. I’m nowhere near as eloquent, but the 360° views from the summit are definitely worth the effort!
